A Mawio’mi (Gathering) for all, honouring Indian Day School Survivors and celebrating Mi’kmaq culture

Wi’kipaltimk, the Mi’kmaq word for feast, is more than a meal—it is a sacred act of gathering with purpose. It represents honour, healing, cultural expression and intergenerational unity through ceremony, song, dance and storytelling.

From August 8-10, 2025, Open Hearth Park in Sydney, Unama’ki (Cape Breton) will become a place of truth-telling and celebration as communities come together to commemorate Indian Day School Survivors and uplift Mi’kmaq culture. Led by Indigenous voices and guided by Survivors, Wi’kipaltimk will feature:

  • A Mawio’mi, Powwow

  • Cultural activities and teachings

  • Nightly Concerts by Indigenous artists

  • Artisan and crafters marketplace

  • Workshops, info sessions on Indian Day School history and healing

  • Indigenous Culinary with Chef Ray Bear
